At what point does an institution or community determine certain practices or pedagogical approaches to be conserved and a permanent part of the structure rather than experimental? How is this seen in the readings corresponding to Black Mountain and St John's?

In Racing Odysseus, how does Roger's lack of participation in classes effect his research, and his immersion at St. John's?

It is evident throughout the memoir that the St. John's curriculum is beneficial in other aspects of life other than in the classroom in terms of Roger's experience. Do you think that this holds true for the majority of passionate and motivated students?
